How to Split Half-Frame Photos

The complete guide to scanning and splitting your half-frame film.

What is Half-Frame Photography?

Half-frame cameras shoot two vertical images on a single 35mm film frame. This means you get 72 exposures on a standard 36-exposure roll! Popular half-frame cameras include:

  • Olympus Pen series (Pen F, Pen EE, Pen D)
  • Canon Demi
  • Yashica Samurai
  • Konica AA-35
  • Kodak Instamatic (some models)

The Scanning Problem

When you get half-frame film developed and scanned, most labs scan it as full 35mm frames. This means each scan contains two of your images merged together.

One scanned frame = Two half-frame shots

Scan

Many labs charge $6-10 extra to cut and scan half-frame properly. That's where our free tool comes in.

How to Use the Splitter

1

Scan Your Film

Get your half-frame film developed and scanned normally. Request high-resolution scans (3000+ pixels) for best results. The scans will show two images per frame.

2

Upload to Splitter

Drag and drop your scanned images (or an entire folder) into our tool. We support JPEG, PNG, WebP, and TIFF formats. You can upload multiple files at once.

3

Auto-Split Magic

The tool automatically detects orientation and splits each scan down the middle. Landscape scans split left/right. Portrait scans split top/bottom.

4

Download & Share

Preview your split images and download them all as a ZIP file. Want to show off your shots? Share them to our community gallery!

Tips for Best Results

  • Request uncut strips from your lab for easier handling
  • Scan at high resolution (3000+ pixels) for print-quality results
  • Select your film stock before uploading for organized ZIP naming
  • Check the aspect ratio warning if something looks off
